How to translate text in an image

  1. Upload a JPG, PNG, or WebP picture that has text on it.
  2. Choose the language for that text.
  3. Download the new picture. The visible wording is translated in place. This can take about a minute.

Picture formats and size

JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 8 MB.

The download is the PNG returned by the model. It still contains the picture, with the text translated.

Each network can translate 8 pictures per UTC day.

What the translated text keeps

The text is regenerated inside a new picture. It is not lifted out as a document, and it is not pasted on as a caption. Faces, layout, and small text can change. A word can be missed or spelled wrong. Very small type suffers first, because the picture is reduced before it is sent. A transparent background in a PNG or WebP stays transparent.

We do not store the picture you upload or the picture you download. Refreshing the page clears the download. The picture is sent to OpenAI, which may keep an abuse-monitoring log for up to 30 days.

Questions about translating text in an image

Can I translate the text in an image for free?

Yes. There is no account. A network can translate 8 pictures each UTC day.

Do I get the words as plain text?

No. The download is a new picture with the text translated. It is not a text file.

Will every word in the image be translated?

Not always. The picture is regenerated, so a word can be missed or spelled wrong. Small text is the most likely to change.

Do you keep the image?

No. We do not store the upload or the download. OpenAI may keep an abuse-monitoring log for up to 30 days.
